InfraVis call 2025 will open in October

Dear Researcher,
The InfraVis Annual Call for Applications will open on October 1st and close on October 31st.

This video is produced by Mario Romero and Fredrik Larsson, Norrköping Science Park.

Scope

Academic research today relies on the analysis of data from a wide range of sources including observations, experiments, sensors, modeling, simulations, text data, surveys, or mining of data repositories. Data analysis and visualization are the tools that InfraVis provides to support scientific workflows. InfraVis is a team of over 50 visualization experts (15 FTEs), across nine universities in Sweden, providing access to development expertise and visualization laboratories addressing the challenges involving large and complex data. Please read more about InfraVis resources at our services page.

Application Requirements

  • The applicant must be a Principal Investigator (PI) who holds a PhD and is an active researcher at a Swedish academic research institution.
  • The aims of the project proposal must include scientific dissemination with at least one of:
    • 1) planned peer-reviewed publication acknowledging the contributions of InfraVis,
    • 2) national scientific outreach and dissemination efforts, for example, a Dome movie visualizing the researchers data and results.
  • The project research group needs to be actively engaged with the activities planned by InfraVis. InfraVis Users need to take part in the regular work to ensure efficient knowledge transfer and the co-design and evaluation of the visualization development.
  • The application must include stated plans to collect datasets or already collected datasets with sufficient detail for InfraVis experts to provide data modeling, analysis and visualization support.
  • The ethical permits and formal handling protocols of sensitive data must be managed by the applicant.
  • The storage and transfer of the data must also be managed by the applicant.
  • InfraVis applies a cost model with subsidized user-fees for this call. Read below.

Levels of Support from InfraVis

There are three levels of support in InfraVis: under 10 hours, under 80 hours, and under 600 hours. This call addresses the second and third levels called “mid-level” and “in-depth support”, respectively. The application will be evaluated and classified as a mid-level support project or as an in-depth support project. If you are unsure of the level of support needed for your project, you are welcome to join one of our three online workshops described below.

User fees

For users from universities, a subsidized user fee of 275 SEK per hour applies to support beyond 80 hours. The fee may be further subsidized based on the demand for and availability of InfraVis expertise, as well as the developmental value of the project for InfraVis. Projects classified entirely as “development projects” for InfraVis may receive full support at no cost. Development projects include those that create interoperability links between Swedish research infrastructures.

How to apply

InfraVis is a human-resource infrastructure that works closely with researchers applying for support. Thus, it is necessary to establish a clear framework that includes expectations, work plans, and infrastructure resources. Hence, we have developed a stepwise application process to support applicants. Applicants are encouraged to follow the dialogue-based process we have developed, but it is possible to apply directly during the call period between October 1st and 31st. The process includes three workshops that will follow the structure below. Applicants are encouraged to attend one of the workshops. We have scheduled three workshops to improve calendar availability for applicants.

Online Workshops: we encourage applicants to attend one of the three online workshops that we will organize.

  • Dates: September 19th, September 26th and October 3rd
  • Time: 13:00 – 15:00.
  • Place: liu-se.zoom.us/my/marioromero.
  • Agenda:
    • Introduction to InfraVis and the application process and material
    • Answer general questions about the application material
    • Brief survey of the applicants attending:
      • Research field
      • Data
      • Typical data processing and visualization examples
      • Stated need for InfraVis support
    • Division into breakout rooms to work 1-on-1 with InfraVis Experts
      • Express in writing and visually the visualization needs of the applicant
      • Answer specific questions about the application material
    • Back to the main room
      • Final questions

Evaluation Criteria

  • Scientific quality and impact – we prioritize examples of excellent research as evidenced by the applicant’s publication record, funding history, innovation potential, and/or societal impact.
  • Visualization impact – we aim to increase the scientific impact of the applicant’s research and its dissemination through visualization support and to strengthen the capacity of the Swedish visualization community including competence, tools, and visualization labs.
  • Spectrum coverage of scientific fields and universities – we aim to prioritize projects that cover different scientific fields and Swedish universities.
  • Competence match – we aim to prioritize projects that match competence and tools with the resources available in InfraVis.
