Overview

PAST – Platsen Asine Spår och Tid, brings archaeological heritage to life through interactive digital storytelling. By combining digital technologies with rich archaeological data, the project creates an immersive experience where visitors can explore archaeological heritage and research through an interactive touchscreen installation at Gustavianum Museum in Uppsala.

Focusing on the ancient site of Asine in the Argolid region of Greece, the interactive application brings together 3D models, photographs, archival documents, film material, maps, and historical texts. Visitors can explore and examine archaeological artifacts to discover how knowledge about the past is created through excavation, documentation, analysis, and interpretation.

The project builds on the results of an earlier InfraVis-supported project, where core concepts and visualization methods were developed and tested. By making both archaeological heritage and research practices accessible to a wider audience, PAST demonstrates how digital visualization can strengthen public engagement with cultural heritage and academic research.

A second outcome of this project is a scientific article co-authored by the Users and InfraVis Application Expert Mattis Lindmark. The article explores how digital visualization can help communicate archaeological knowledge production and the unique role of university museums in making research processes visible to the public.
