InfraVis International Outreach
Time: October 2023
Location: Melbourne, Australia
In October 2023, InfraVis members and researchers traveled to Melbourne, Australia, to present their work and discuss the latest advances at the premier forum for advances in visualization and visual analytics, colloquially known as IEEE VIS. There, the chair of InfraVis’s Steering Group, Prof. Anders Ynnerman, was invited to be the 2023 keynote speaker along with Dr. Drew Berry. Together, they presented “Visualizing the Chemistry of Life on giant 360-degree screens” and the concepts they have been working on in the last couple of years for dissemination of scientific results to the public in informal learning contexts such as science centers and museums. The recording of the keynote is available on YouTube.
The day following the keynote, visualization researchers were invited to watch at the Melbourne Planetarium, the award-winning dome movie produced by Drew, Anders, and colleagues “Chemistry of Life.”
In addition, Anders Ynnerman presented new research results at the conference. First, with Alexander Bock (member of the InfraVis faculty) they presented their paper “ExoplanetExplorer: Contextual Visualization of Exoplanet Systems.” Anders Ynnerman was involved in two other paper presentations, namely “A Computational Design Pipeline to Fabricate Sensing Network Physicalizations“, and “Design of an Ecological Visual Analytics Interface for Operators of Time-Constant Processes.”
Other infraVis researchers, coordinators, application experts, and InfraVis faculty were also present at the conference to present their work and shape the future of the IEEE VIS conference and community.
Andreas Kerren (Lineus Node Coordinator) had a paper presentation for “2D, 2.5D, or 3D? An Exploratory Study on Multilayer Network Visualisations in Virtual Reality“, and chaired two presentation sessions during the week.
Alexander Bock was a co-chair for Vis in Practice.
Katerina Vrotsou (InfraVis faculty member at Linköping University) was a publication co-chair.
Ingrid Hotz (InfraVis faculty at Linköping University) was a session chair during the week and obtained the best paper award at the TopoInVis workshop along with Talha Bin Masood (InfraVis faculty at Linköping University) for their paper “Multi-field Visualisation via Trait-induced Merge Trees.”
Lonni Besançon (Linköping Node Coordinator) co-organized the alt.VIS workshop where he also had a paper “LSDvis: Hallucinatory data visualisations in real world environments,” presented two posters “Magic Portal Interaction to Support Precise Embodied Mid-air and Haptic Selection-at-a-distance” and “Multi-Device Forensic Autopsy Documentation and Report Generation Using Mixed Reality,” participated in the organization of the conference and to the Townhall as part of a co-chair for Open Practices, an
Finally, multiple members and partners of InfraVis participated in the program committee of the conference: Ingrid Hotz, Andreas Kerren, Katerina Vrotsou, Talha Bin Masood, and Anders Ynnerman.
